What is turning?

Turning is a machining process in which material is removed from a rotating workpiece to achieve the desired shape and size. During the turning process, the workpiece is clamped in a lathe and rotates about its axis while a fixed cutting tool removes the material.

This process allows the production of cylindrical components with high precision. Turning is often used to produce parts such as shafts, bolts and axles. The materials that can be machined cover a wide range, including metals such as steel, stainless steel, aluminum as well as various plastics.

Turning plays an important role in many industries, especially in mechanical engineering, the automotive industry and aerospace. Modern CNC lathes, which operate under computer control, allow for high levels of accuracy and efficiency, which enables the production of complex and precise parts.
